Public speaking
Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking is one of the fears believed to be affecting 75% of our population. Some say public speaking fear is built within individuals over time. For example childhood trauma or fear of being judged or even the build up of avoiding public speaking can contribute to the terror of speaking in public. The fear of public speaking affects individuals differently. Some may just feel nervous while others go into complete panic. Speaking face to face to a live audience may seem nerve wrecking and in my opinion it can make me feel a bit uneasy at times. Luckily, while watching all of my classmates' different presentations and viewpoints I have picked up on very helpful tips to incorporate into public speaking. Speaking to an audience takes a lot of planning and courage. There are many factors the presenter needs to consider.
Glossophobia
For instance, after watching the group's presentation I was cultivated on research and presentation and its importance when it comes down to public speaking. Making sure your sources are reliable is crucial. Using the internet is a useful way to carry out research But you must Be mindful where you are getting the information from. Although the internet is full of substantial information there is also misleading information that is not necessarily correct. The best information sources occur from high quality sources and typically can have a price on it. Locating web sources with the correct information is key. While searching for the web source you may want to keep in mind a few properties of a reliable source. For example, is the supporting material clear? Is it promoting accuracy, consistency and precision? Confirm the sources are not biased, make certain of funded and sponsored sources. Browsing the internet is useful and has all types of information. It is up to the presenter to scale out the correct information. Presenters should validate information and determine what will best support their presentation.
Delivering Speeches
Presenting a speech can be a piece of cake, if you are prepared. Delivering a speech consists of many things. Keeping your body moving and speaking in a calmly confident manner while also keeping eye contact with the entire audience will make your speech stronger. While delivering a speech adjusting your tone of voice according to the content, rate and situation is a good tip. Also , using pitch for expressions and pause for effects makes a good speech. Make sure that you are speaking at a normal rate so that the audience can completely understand what you are trying to emphasize. Incorporating your body language into the speech can make it all come together smoothly. The right attire also can impact your speech.
There are many types of speeches, informative speeches, special occasion speeches, persuasive speeches, etc. speeches are very important because they allow leaders to reveal their viewpoints and ideas. It influences decision making and motivates change. It allows us to form connections and progress. Public speaking is one of the most important forms of communication.
Presenting a speech is challenging but after reflecting on my classmates' presentations on the breakdown of public speaking I definitely can agree that having the correct research with good sources and organization will lead to a better presentation. In my opinion all of my classmates did an awesome job at providing the right information and tips for public speaking. The groups made their PowerPoints organized and really focused on getting the sub points of the topic. After reviewing the PowerPoints I now feel that I have more knowledge on public speaking than I did before. I also feel more confident to speak in public now that I have all the right information on what to do and what not to do during presentations. Very detailed presentations with so much useful information.
This was great!! Beautiful reflection and writing!
